With the first shows of the Fall/Winter season underway, it’s time to up the style ante and take some cues from those who influence our daily wardrobe decisions. Five key rules distinguish New York style...
1. Clean, minimalist lines.
2. Sports-infused ease.
3. Tomboyish insouciance.
4. Structured tailoring.
5. Statement accessories.

And in reality? For those of you in your thirties and under, balancing these rules means pairing a high-fashion sneaker or varsity-inspired jacket with a flouncy skirt or flirty dress. To beat the cold, opt for a long, loose palazzo pant or a floor-skimming skirt with hidden thermals. Denim (which must be patchwork or frayed and just below mid-calf this season) can also be mashed up with precious metallics, satins, bright embellishments, and happy hues.
For something more sophisticated, know that athleticism isn’t just for gym bunnies. Bold graphic lines and plaid separates are on trend. Dresses can be elevated with a long, tailored overcoat. And sporty stripes are big for spring—try the classic ‘banker’ blue with white narrow lines, or go all in by fully sporting pinstripes.
The hit sleeve shape is long and flared—outerwear, shirts, sweaters, and dresses all make the grade, just as long as the fabric is pure and simple. If in doubt, you can certainly pair your structured and voluminous separates together, but don’t drown in the silhouette. Nip in the waist and flash some ankle. Print wise, it's all about oversized, abstract art forms—nothing figurative, dainty, or girly. New Yorkers are to be taken seriously.
And finally, accessories are where to have your fun while channeling your inner-Manhattanite. Structured architectural bags with solid hardware are the must-have, ideally in primary colors. Pair that timeless asymmetric shirt with statement jewelry. For your feet, throw on a pair of chunky ‘grandma’ shoes to add a little wit to a mainly mannish look, or simply slip on a pair of flat, pointed mules to add a prim and proper punctuation mark.
